Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall

Jerry Brownfield, B Trp & HHT 69/70, visited the Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall when it was in Des Moines, Iowa on September 17, 2011. The Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall is a three-quarter-scale traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Created by the Dignity Memorial network of funeral, cremation and cemetery service providers in 1990, the Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall is dedicated to all Americans who served in Vietnam and honors all veterans of the U.S. military.

25th Infantry Division Association Reunion 2011

Fellow Troopers,

   Fifteen 3/4 Cavalry Chapter members attended the 62nd 25th Infantry Division Association Reunion 25 September to 2 October held at Waikiki, Hawaii. 177 25th IDA members were in attendance. Including spouses, children, and grandchildren 410 were in attendance. All of us had a great time.

     The keynote speaker at the banquet was LTG Robert Foley, Ret. General Foley is a Medal of Honor recipient. He was awarded the MOH for actions as a company commander in the 25th Infantry Division's 27th Infantry Regiment, Wolfhounds, during the Vietnam War.

   The 25th Division at Scholfield Barracks hosted Tropic Lightning Day to honor the veterans in attendance and to dedicate the General Weyand Parade Field. Tropic Lightning Day included a tour of facilities at Schofield Barracks and a division review in honor of the 70th anniversary of the division's activation. See video of the division review below.

     A memorial service was held on the last day of the reunion at the National Cemetery of the Pacific. Names were read of casualties from the WOT and members who have passed since the last reunion. See video of ceremony below.

Bob Maxey is in the Hospital

Fellow Troopers! Bob Maxey, B & F Troop (68/69/70), fell and broke his hip and had to have surgery. He is out of the hospital, but in a rehab center, called, of all things, the Holiday Resort. His wife Ardean doesn't know how long he will be there, but is making some progress. His contact information is as follows:

The 4th Cavalry Regiment is one of the most famous and most decorated regiments in the United States Army. Since its activation in 1855, twenty-nine of the regiment's soldiers have been awarded the Medal of Honor during the the Civil War, Indian Wars, the Philippine Insurrection, & Vietnam.

Medal of Honor Citation:For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. 1st Lt. Steindam, Troop B, while serving as a platoon leader, led members of his platoon on a night ambush operation. On the way to the ambush site, suspected enemy movement was detected on 1 flank and the platoon's temporary position was subjected to intense small arms and automatic weapons fire as well as a fusillade of hand and rocket-propelled grenades. After the initial barrage, 1st Lt. Steindam ordered fire placed on the enemy position and the wounded men to be moved to a shallow bomb crater. As he directed the return fire against the enemy from his exposed position, a fragmentation grenade was thrown into the site occupied by his command group. Instantly realizing the extreme gravity of the situation, 1st Lt. Steindam shouted a warning to alert his fellow soldiers in the immediate vicinity. Then, unhesitatingly and with complete disregard for his safety, 1st Lt. Steindam deliberately threw himself on the grenade, absorbing the full and fatal force of the explosion as it detonated. By his gallant action and self-sacrifice, he was able to save the lives of the nearby members of his command group. The extraordinary courage and selflessness displayed by 1st Lt. Steindam were an inspiration to his comrades and are in the highest traditions of the U.S. Army.

Medal of Honor Citation:For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Troops B and C, while conducting a reconnaissance mission along a road were suddenly attacked by a Viet Cong regiment, supported by mortars, recoilless rifles and machine guns, from concealed positions astride the road. Sgt. Long abandoned the relative safety of his armored personnel carrier and braved a withering hail of enemy fire to carry wounded men to evacuation helicopters. As the platoon fought its way forward to resupply advanced elements, Sgt. Long repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire at point blank range to provide the needed supplies. While assaulting the Viet Cong position, Sgt. Long inspired his comrades by fearlessly standing unprotected to repel the enemy with rifle fire and grenades as they attempted to mount his carrier. When the enemy threatened to overrun a disabled carrier nearby, Sgt. Long again disregarded his own safety to help the severely wounded crew to safety. As he was handing arms to the less seriously wounded and reorganizing them to press the attack, an enemy grenade was hurled onto the carrier deck. Immediately recognizing the imminent danger, he instinctively shouted a warning to the crew and pushed to safety one man who had not heard his warning over the roar of battle. Realizing that these actions would not fully protect the exposed crewmen from the deadly explosion, he threw himself over the grenade to absorb the blast and thereby saved the lives of 8 of his comrades at the expense of his life. Throughout the battle, Sgt. Long's extraordinary heroism, courage and supreme devotion to his men were in the finest tradition of the military service, and reflect great credit upon himself and the U.S. Army.

Wreath Laying at Washington's Tomb

TSA Expands Wounded Warrior Security Program to All Veterans

Fellow Troopers,

Many Paralyzed Veterans of America members have made complaints about problems with airport security, such as being requested to get out of their wheelchairs, remove their shoes, or display personal medical devices. Now an existing Transportation Security Administration (TSA) program for injured service members has recently been expanded to permit all veterans to proceed through security safely and with dignity.

Initially, the TSA worked with the Department of Defense (DOD) to create a program to ease the airport screening process for injured service members. Since 2005, DOD’s Military Severely Injured Joint Services Operations Center Program has included TSA staff on a 24-hour, 7-day a week basis. When an injured service member provided flight information to the center, TSA staff would guide the passenger through the security process. The TSA liaison officer notified the appropriate federal security director at relevant airports to ensure that any security screening required at those airports would be conducted by TSA screening experts with empathy and respect.

Recently, this program became available to all veterans, so anyone who has served in the military can take advantage. The veteran or service member should contact the Operations Center’s 24–72 hours before a confirmed flight at the toll-free number (888) 262-2396 with flight information. The passenger may also email the call center at MSIJSOC@DHS.GOV with the itinerary. Callers will be connected to a TSA liaison officer who will notify security officials as described above. The hotline will not be able to assist if the call is more than 72 hours or less than 24 hours before the flight is scheduled to leave before the flight is scheduled to leave.

Military Order of the Purple Heart

The Military Order of the Purple Heart has recently reduced the fee for lifetime membership to $50. Holders of the Purple Heart who wish to join can apply online at Military Order of the Purple Heart Website.

The mission of the Military Order of the Purple Heart is to foster an environment of goodwill and camaraderie among combat wounded veterans, promote patriotism, support necessary legislative initiatives, and most importantly, provide service to all veterans and their families.

The Order now includes about 43,000 Total members, organized into 6 geographical Regions, 49 State Departments, and 499 Chapters. The Order’s annual operating budget is approximately $10.5 million of which nearly $7.3 million goes to support the Service Program.

A Troop Vets Support Apache Troop's Deployment

The current A Troop will deploy to Afghanistan next month. For some background the troop commander, Cpt Adam McCombs has made contact with us and desires to connect the current troop members to those from the past. He recently held a pre-deployment dining-in dinner for the troops and their families. He ask a few of us to make video comments about the troop's time in Vietnam. Several of us (Mel Moss, Art Ryan, and I) did that for him. Art Bonevich donated his A troop guidon from 1966 that was displayed at the dinner and will accompany the squadron to Afghanistan.

Cpt McCombs has provided us with the names of the troopers going on the deployment to Afghanistan. He has troopers in the troop from PV1s to 1LTs. What we would like to do is have enough of us to sponsor one of the troopers during the deployment so that each one will have at least one of us to communicate with. At a minimum you would need to write the trooper a couple of times a month. Later on we might need you to send a goodies package, calling card, or other items that Cpt McCombs feels the troop needs.

I think we all remember how important contact with home was during our tours and hope you can sponsor one Apache Trooper. If we end up with more than what is needed then some troopers will have a couple of sponsors. This will not start right away. Historic A Troop Guidon to go to Afghanistan

Art Bonevich recently donated his A Troop guidon from 1966 to the 3rd Squadron 4th Cavalry in Hawaii. The Squadron Command Sergeant Major, Mark Kiefer, has notified Art that the guidon is being taken to Afghanistan with the squadron. Here is CSM Kiefer's letter to Art:

"I just received the A Troop guidon you sent. With your permission, I want to take it to Afghanistan and use it as a historic item of display. I will photograph it in various ceremonies giving it a service life of over 45 years. I have inspected it and have deemed it serviceable for the mission. At the conclusion of the deployment, I will frame the guidon and use your photos and those that I take to illustrate its long 46 year history to the Squadron.

Please inform your former brethren, that the A Troop colors of 1966 have
been called to action in Afghanistan.

Thanks for sending these items, we will be honored to have them for
posterity."

Gene Simmons Military Tribute

Cavalry Troop Photo from 1880s

The 3rd Squadron 4th Cavalry traces its direct lineage to C Troop 4th Cavalry which was constituted 3 March 1855 in the Regular Army as Company C, 1st Cavalry organized 17 June 1855 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. The troop was redesignated 3 August 1861 as Company C, 4th Cavalry. C Troop was reorganized and re-designated 29 July 1963 as the 3d Squadron, 4th Cavalry.

Bingo Bingham recently received a photograph of C Troop, our squadron's ancestor organization, taken in the 1880s at Ft. Huachuca, AZ. The photograph is from the J.H. Dorst papers in the library of the USMA. J.H. Dorst served in the 4th Cavalry and is in front of C Troop in this photo.

The photo was taken by C.S. Fly. See the back of the photo below. C.S. Fly ran a lodging house and photo studio in the mining town of Tombstone, Arizona in the 1880's. Doc Holliday lodged in C.S. Fly's lodging house. C.S Fly's studio was located next to the OK Corral. Billy Clanton was shot in the alley next to Fly's Lodging House, where the Clanton's had gathered. Billy was relieved of his pistol by C. S. Fly after the gun fight. In 1886, Fly accompanied General Crook to Canyon de Los Embudos for the negotiations with Geronimo. His most famous photographs are of Geronimo, the negotiations, and the Apaches.

Alpha Troop Veterans Watch Super Bowl in Style

A Troopers Manny Montanez, Steve Turner, and David Olsen attended the super bowl party hosted by Jerry & Julie Crisp at their estate in Cota de Coza, California. The couple opened their home to 100 Marines from Camp Pendelton and 75 other area veterans.

The guests were entertained by the USC Marching Band, The San Diego Charger Cheerleaders, and a Rolling Stones tribute band. The super bowl was shown on large screen TV's throughout the estate. The event took the couple 3 months of planning and cost about $100,000 dollars. This is the first year the Crisp's hosted area veterans and the fourth year for the Marines at their home for the super bowl. Manny Montanez, 1st platoon 68/69, assisted the Crisp's with the planning.

SSG Manny Montanez and SGT Steve Turner get re-acquainted for the first time after 42 years. Manny was the Tank Commander on A16 a M48 Tank, in A troop, 3/4 Cav in Cu Chi, South Vietnam. Steve was the loader on the same tank. On 8 Jan 69 the tank was hit by an RPG through the left side of the tank. Manny's legs took the full force of the blast. Steve was standing next to him inside and received a small wound.

The USC Marching Band welcomes the veterans to the party.

During the event the Marine and Veteran guests were treated to the super bowl on Multiple Big-Screen TVs, use of the Swimming Pool & Spa, Cigars, greeting by NFL Cheerleaders, mingling with Pro Football Players & Celebrities, Therapeutic Massages, Boxing, a riding bull, Opportunity Drawings, Giveaways, and abundant Food and Drinks. L.A. based singer Leah Turner performed for the guests.

The San Diego Charger Cheerleaders and the Rolling Stones tribute band pose for photos.

The American Eagle was a fitting entrance to this 2011 Super Bowl Party honoring United States Veterans. The party was hosted by Gary and Julie Crisp, who opened their home and hearts to Marines from Camp Pendleton and many Veterans of all ages from a variety of Units.

Kudos to Gary & Julie Crisp for this wonderful event for our veterans.

Cold War Certificate of Recognition

All members of the armed forces who faithfully served the United States during the Cold War era, Sept. 2, 1945 to Dec. 26, 1991 are eligible for the Cold War Certificate. It is easy to obtain. Just complete the form online & print it. Then fax it and your supporting document to the address on the form. The Army indicates it takes about 2 months to get your certificate but it has been less than 2 weeks recently. The Army is the managing agent for DOD, so make your Navy, Air Force, & Marine friends who are veterans aware of the program. Refer them to the U.S. Army Human Resources Command

The new Album is titled “Music from the Western Frontier, Vol. 2. The issue date is August 2010. This album is dedicated to the memory of the Band’s Founder, Ray Hicks (1937-2006) who is the person most responsible for the success of the Old Arizona Brass Band. Some of the songs on this album feature his outstanding cornet solos.

All of the music in this album was written in the 19th Century and typical of the music performed by Army Bands in the West in the late 1800’s. Combat Veterans Sought for Study

The Stress, Health, and Aging Research Project (SHARP) at the VA Boston Healthcare System is seeking participants for a study of their experiences and feeling of combat Veterans as they grow older. We are recruiting Veterans age 55 and older who have had combat experience. Participation involves completing several questionnaires that will be mailed to you and should take between 70-80 minutes, depending upon the number of questionnaires you are asked to complete. To thank you for your time, you will be given $20. Your responses will be confidential and used only for the purposes of the study. For further information or to participate, call 1-800-865-3384 Ext. 45309. When you hear the greeting message for the VA Boston Health care System, you may dial our extension (45309) immediately without waiting to hear the telephone menu choices. Only about total 65 surveys have been completed so far so please support this project.

Memorial Day

Today is a day to honor and remember those who sacrificed their lives for our Nation. Today I remember two young men, heroes, that I served with. SGT James Feeney, killed in action on February 2, 1969, and SGT Thomas Robertson, died of wounds on April 12, 1969. These young men are two of the eighty-seven members of A Troop 3rd Squadron 4th Cavalry who did not return from the Vietnam War. These men were among the best and brightest of their generation. We can not repay their families for the suffering and sacrifice the families have endured. We can honor those who have fallen and never forget their heroism. As I watched protests in Arizona this weekend, I hope the protesters both for and against Arizona SB1070 realize the reason they have the right to protest is because of the servicemen and servicewomen who sacrificed their lives to maintain our freedoms. Our military personnel who are deployed now are protecting our rights and freedoms. Keep them in your thoughts also this Memorial Day.

Use Maplandia for 3/4 Cav Locations in Vietnam

Doug Clapp sent these directions to use Maplandia to view the locations we fought at while in Vietnam. Follow his directions below.

Cu Chi Base Camp: Google 'Go Dau Ha Vietnam and select 'google satellite maps'. Go SE to Trang Bang. Go a little further on and look for where hwy 8 crosses Huong L02. At the V that is formed is the Cu Chi base camp. Perimeter road is still there but new gate. Ann Margaret gate is still there and look how built up it is there now. Squadron HQ and motor pools are pretty well empty. Airstrip is there. You can see where Div HQ was and the landing pad in front of the buildings are gone but new ones are there.

The Donut: Go back NW to Trang Bang and follow hwy 782 center on where 782 meets 784. Just above the jct is a small road/trail running ESE in a straight line through some orchards. It meets a canal that runs SW. Coming from the NE cross over straight ahead into the new satellite map. The road continues ESE passes under 2 little white clouds then road curves to NE. Then
stop. Go directly East 090 1 Km. A field mostly rectangle in shape with greenery bordering it with white whispy cloud above. That is where the Donut was. Now a large canal from Dau Tieng resevoir runs close by going SSE. It is lined by roads on either side with houses and driveways. No jungle, no bomb craters, lots of irregated fields and never in my wildest imagination 40 years ago would I have seen how the Boi Loi looks today!

Boi Loi Woods Jan 17, 1969 battle: Zoom out a little. You see where Hwy 6 seems to stop as it comes West. It stops being a yellow/white line. Keep going west on the road and where the road curves toward the SW was the site of the fight. Just beyond is almost the last of the Boi Loi as we knew it. You can see some bomb craters in there. The rest of the woods is
totally cleared and farmed. Amazing!

Fire Support Base Hampton: Center on Go Dau Ha and the bridge, then follow the Vam Co Dong river SSE. Just before the river curves to the SW, Go directly East to hwy 22 a road from the ENE runs into hwy 22.

Enjoy. You should be able to use Google Earth and do the same thing.

Call for Photos - Vietnam Veterans Memorial

The original purpose of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was that no one would ever forget the names of those brave men and women who gave their lives for our country. Forty percent of the visitors who visit the "Wall" are now too young to remember the war. The Education Center at the Wall has a goal to collect all 58,261 photographs of each name inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. We need to not only remember their names, but we need to never forget their faces.

54 of our unit's 87 casualties do not have a photograph on our web site's Memorial Page. If you have a photo of one of our comrades that did not return, submit it to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial web site or send it to our troop web site and we will submit if for you. Check our Memorial Pages for the troopers who do not have photos and check your old pictures from Vietnam. If you do not have a scanner, FedEX will scan the photo for you for free and submit it. We would also like a copy for our web site. Information is available on the "Call for Photos!" web page at the Vietnam Memorial Fund web site.

For our comrades we need 1 photo from 1965, 2 photos from 1966, 8 photos from 1967, 32 photos from 1968, 2 photos from 1969, and 7 photos from 1970. You can see which of our casualties we do not have photos of at our Memorial Page.

September 11, 2001 - Remember

As the chaos unfolded on September 11, 2001, each and every freedom-loving American rediscovered their devotion to country. We stood together as a nation of citizens, policemen, firemen, & servicemen refusing to surrender to fear. That day, police, fire, & medical personnel answered the call of duty without hesitation and at great personal cost. In honor of those who died on that horrible day and to our military who have responded over the past 8 years fighting at home and abroad to preserve our freedom, remember to fly your United States flag on September 11th. Our American flag is the fabric of our country and together we can prevail over terrorism. God bless all our military!

Take a moment to think back to how you felt on 9/11.

Fly an American flag of any size on 9/11. Americans should fly the flag year-round and I know many of us do, but if you don't, then at least make it a priority on this day.

"Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Jeff Persons. My father, Harold Persons, was in 1^st platoon A troop during 1968. He was injured by an RPG in a fire fight. Shortly after the injury occurred his mother fell ill and he returned state side. Due to the circumstances and the way things fall through the cracks in our military he was never awarded a Purple Heart. I am making an attempt to have him awarded the Purple Heart for these injuries. I am writing to see if you can be of any help contacting one of the guys that he remembers as being there when it happened. One name he mentioned was Sgt. White who passed away sometime after the war. Another person he remembers is Wayne Suddeth. If you can be of any help it would be greatly appreciated."

1st Plt A Troop 3/4 Cav Current Tour in Iraq

Fellow Troopers,

3/4 Cavalry will complete its current deployment to Iraq in October. The squadron is operating in the Balad area. They recently transfered Forward Operating Base Paliwoda to Iraq control. See the news release at this link.

I was born on June 14, 1777, in Philadelphia.

There the Continental Congress adopted my stars and stripes as the national flag.

Today fifty stars signal from my union, one for each of the fifty sovereign states in the greatest constitutional republic the world has ever known.

My colors symbolize the patriotic ideals and spiritual qualities of the citizens of my country.

My red stripes proclaim the fearless courage and integrity of American men and boys and the self-sacrifice and devotion of American mothers and daughters.

My white stripes stand for liberty and equality for all.

My blue is the blue of heaven, loyalty, and faith.

Civil War/Indian War Troopers Reburied With Honors

Fellow Troopers,

On May 16th fifty-eight Civil War and Indian War soldiers were reburied with honors at the Sierra Vista National Cemetery in Sierra Vista, AZ. Les Stafford, A Trp 66/67, attended the ceremony and provided these photos. Click on the photo to see it full size.

The remains were discovered during construction that uncovered an abandoned cemetery in Tucson. They were exhumed to make room for the Pima County court complex. Some of the soldiers fought in the Civil War while stationed in the Arizona Territory. Others were assigned to Arizona during the Indian Wars. Two were are Indian scouts, and one is a Buffalo Soldier.

The soldiers served as cavalry, infantry, cooks, musicians, or farriers. Most had been assigned to Ft. Lowell in Tucson. The soldiers names were identified through the use of old military and cemetery records. The names were not matched to specific remains because of a lack of DNA evidence.

Honors rendered during the ceremony.

The governor of Arizona, other dignitaries, and a large crowd attended the ceremony. Several Veterans organizations in Arizona came up with the idea to move the soldiers remains to the National Cemetery and planned the reburial of the soldiers. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs provided marble markers for the graves.

Armed Forces Day

Fellow Troopers,

Today is Armed Forces Day. It will not get much coverage in the news. It is an important day that was created in 1949 by President Truman so that our nation can honor our servicemen and servicewomen that serve around the world protecting our freedom. It takes a great deal of courage to join the military. Maybe even more so today when it seems that service in the military is looked on as a lesser calling by some portions of our society. Those who serve today are our new "Greatest Generation". They know the meaning of "Duty, Honor, & Country and they know sacrifice. I am proud of them all. My hat is off to each and everyone of them. It is also special for those of us who served during previous conflicts like our Vietnam War. We have a bond with those who serve today. I know you all do this but anytime you see one of our servicemen or servicewomen thank them for their service. It makes their day a whole lot better to know that they are appreciated.

Run for the Wall 2009

The purpose of the Ride to the Wall is promote healing among ALL veterans and their families and friends, to call for an accounting of all Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action (POW/MIA), to honor the memory of those Killed in Action (KIA) from all wars, and to support our military personnel all over the world.

The ride is conducted in a safe, supportive and private atmosphere in which all participants can reflect and heal on their journey to the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C. in the hope that they can return home to a new beginning.

If other former troopers are participating in the Run for the Wall, let us know and we will annotate it here.

October Luau for SFC Nui and 3/4 Cav

Mel has received a couple of emails from SFC Nuiokealoha Aumua. Nui was the 3/4 Cav's representative to our last reunion. Nui and the squadron are currently deployed in Iraq. Nui will be hosting a luau when the squadron returns to Hawaii in October. All are invited. If you need to contact Nui email Mel or John for his email address.

Nui's Comments: Gents! Sorry I'm always sporadic at responding to emails. Long story short using AKO is really a pain. Well, I'm finally in country and was able to join up with my guys and begun conducting my missions once again along their side. Everyones doing great and awesome to be able to serve along side my men.
Just a little side note, my family is throwing a welcome back Luau for the Squadron and everyones invited... That includes all of you, and I'm mean everyone, and their families as well! It's going to be a big one, my family threw one when I returned from Afghanistan for 2-5 Bobcats and was planning on throwing one last year but we ran into some issues, lol! But the tentative date is set for Oct 30th, of course it may change if the Squadron is held here a bit longer than scheduled. Ive already spoken with LTC Hodne and CSM Stout and asked if they could pass the word to all the Troopers. Theres going to be entertainment (cultural dances), things for the kids to enjoy, and of course tons of food, plus part or the deal was that I dance so... Ha ha, Its been a few years and actually the last time I did was for the last Luau! Anyhow, the only thing required of the Association or the Squadron is help on putting out the word and an appetite!
My mother is the one planning anything so if there are any changes she is gonna know first. And if you have any questions feel free to contact her. Again sorry, for such late responses and please if you do have any other questions or concerns from any of the other veterans feel free to give them my email address as well.

Were all doing good and compared to the past deployments were living like fat rats. Except for one thing, lol, but I dont think that'll ever change within the Army... Chow stinks, ha ha, but I'm sure you know all to well how that goes. Take care, keep in touch, and same here let me know if any of the other Troopers need anything.

School Supplies for Iraqi Kids

Update: We raised $345.00 for school supply purchase.

Thank you to all who contributed to this worthy project. We raised $345.00 including a $50.00 donation from the Yorktown, VA Walmart. We purchased 2 shopping carts of school supplies and mailed them to the squadron on Mar 3rd.

Linda Moss, a retired teacher and wife of former Trp Cdr Mel Moss, graciously volunteered to purchase and ship the supplies to CSM Stout.

The December newsletter contained an article from CSM Stout requesting school supplies be sent to the squadron in Iraq to support their efforts to equip local Iraqi elementary school children with much needed school supplies. School is back in session and they need pencils, crayons, markers, colored pencils, pens, erasers, glue, and paints.

A former trooper has suggested that we collect funds, purchase, and ship school supplies to CSM Stout to support the squadron's effort. As a start he has donated $100 towards the purchase of school supplies. Our goal is to buy school supplies and pay for shipping them to Iraq.

Thanksgiving

4o years ago we spent our Thanksgiving in a far away place. Today our thoughts go out to our soldiers who today are far from home. It is appropriate that today we consider the words of the first Commander-in-Chief, George Washington. As you read his thoughts, remember during the holiday season those who are on the front lines today, carrying out the tradition to protect the principles that our nation holds sacred, and thank them for their sacrifices.

A Troop has lost a friend - Craig Peterson

Fellow Troopers,

For all ¾ CAV members who are not yet aware, we’ve all recently lost a good friend. Craig Peterson from Delta Troop passed away recently due to complications after having knee replacement surgery at the Minneapolis VA hospital. Craig served two tours as a helicopter pilot in Viet Nam and was single-handedly responsible for evacuating the many killed and all of the known wounded personnel at FSB Schofield on the night of August 24, 1968.

In addition to the A-Troop personnel who were evacuated, Craig evacuated all of the wounded members from the 3 Wolfhounds companies as well as the two artillery batteries lagered with the Troop at the fire support base. (The battle was so intense and the availability of dust-offs so limited, that several dead Wolfhounds and artillery personnel were not flown out of the battlefield until the morning light when the battle broke off and additional air support finally arrived.)

Due to the ferocity of the battle, dust-off support from the 25th Aviation Battalion, which had in the past routinely provided medical evacuations to the ¾ CAV as well as other field combat units, was denied to the besieged combatants at FSB Schofield. Having been assaulted by heavy weapons fire and human wave attacks, the 25th Aviation command would not allow their ships or crews to enter the hostile combat zone. There were many killed during the firefight and many of the wounded needed immediate medical attention due to the severity of their wounds or they would have perished.

However, our Delta Troop pilots were not under the command of the 25th Aviation Battalion. They were a part of the ¾ CAV and they always came when they were called, even when others would not. There was only one Delta Troop helicopter pilot assigned to the air that August night and it was our own Craig Peterson. Craig not only made the initial retrieval of dead and wounded at the fire support base, but even after experiencing first hand, the intensity of the battle and upon realizing that any subsequent attempts to land within the fire support base would pose a serious risk to his life as well as that of his crew, his bravery and selfless dedication to his fellow troopers showed through when he choose to repeatedly fly into the heat of battle to retrieve all of the dead and wounded who were brought to his chopper for evacuation.

The first casualties of the battle were medivaced to the Dau Tieng base camp hospital until Dau Tieng reached full capacity. Craig next evacuated wounded to the hospital at Tay Ninh base camp. When the Tay Ninh facility could no longer accept casualties, Craig evacuated the remaining wounded to the 12th Evac Hospital at Cu Chi, which is where I ended up.

If you were involved in that battle, then Craig either medivaced you or one of your buddies and possibly saved their life. It’s estimated that Craig evacuated between 60 and 80 personnel from FSB Schofield, the actual number remains uncertain. However, he was there for us when no one else would come and he was there when we needed him most.

Craig was an unassuming individual and always felt that he ‘was just doing his job’, but for many of us, him doing his job is the reason we’re still alive today. He was a hero among heroes. He was the living embodiment of our unit logo, “Paratus et Fidelis”-- Prepared and Loyal!

So today, I’m asking all of you for your help in honoring this great American hero. Before Craig passed away an organized effort was underway to attempt to obtain for Craig this nation’s highest award, The Congressional Medal of Honor. During the war in Viet Nam, another dust-off pilot, Major Patrick Henry Brady was awarded the Medal of Honor for evacuating 51 killed and wounded friendly personnel out of harms way. During the Battle of Tay Ninh, on the night of August 24th, 1968, Craig was responsible for evacuating even more personnel than Major Brady evacuated, but since 40 years have passed since the battle took place, its been very difficult to obtain statements in support of his claim from personnel who were actually at the battle and who are aware of the bravery of this man who risked his life to save ours.

If you were present during the battle that took place at Fire Support Base Schofield on the night of August 24th, 1968, or if you know of someone who was, you now have a chance to step forward and honor a true American hero. Statements supporting Craig’s heroic actions are needed from those who were present in order to move forward with obtaining his award. Reunion was a great Success!

Hello Alpha Troopers,

It was great to see you all again at the reunion. Attendance was very good this year. We had 49 Alpha Troopers at the reunion. We had several first timers and they really enjoyed renewing friendships with their former comrades. Our special name tags were a big success. If you did not have a 'Then & Now' photo on your name tag, get one sent into the website. We are working on Alpha Troop T-Shirts for the next reunion. Cost will be about $28.00. More information will follow.

The 2010 reunion will be held in Tucson, Arizona from April 28th to May 2nd of 2010. We hope to see all of you there and hope some of you west coast troopers who could not attend this year will be able to join us.

Of special note is the kindness displayed by the Alpha Troop members at the reunion. One of our reunion goals this year was to collect money to purchase memorial bricks for our fallen comrades. Alpha Troopers at the reunion contributed $3158.00 towards the purchase of bricks. Thanks to each of you who contributed to this cause. Once I get back to Tucson I will get the bricks ordered. We will be able to purchase at least 31 bricks for our fallen soldiers. Thanks for a job well done! A special thanks goes out to Mel Moss, Gene Yonke, Bob Rahnefeld, and Bill Baum who helped put together our brick donation project display. If you order a brick between now and the time I get back to Tucson please let us know who you purchase the brick in memory of so that we don't double order bricks. Reunion Update

As we move forward together towards the LD for the reunion, here are a few things we are working on. Please get the word out to all of your email contacts about these items.

Specialist Justin Snell will be one of the 3/4 Cav's representatives at the reunion. He is a member of A Troop stationed currently in Hawaii. He will be arriving at Ft. Mitchell on June 26th. I know you will make him feel welcome. All Alpha troopers need to take him under their wings and take good care of him.
We are going to make a push to collect money for an Alpha Troop memorial brick fund. We still need to purchase bricks for a significant number of our fallen comrades. Look for this sign in the hospitality room or find Gene Yonke, Mel Moss, or John Moore. We may need helpers occasionally to sit at the collection table.
We have made special name tags for Alpha Troop this year. If you are on the association's attendance list we will have a name tag for you. Find John Moore to get your name tag. Name tags will be at the Memorial Brick table if John is not in the hospitality room. Here is a sample of our name tag. Photos are different on each name tag.

Memorial Day 2008

Greetings Fellow Troopers

Last year I wrote that unfortunately for many of our citizens Memorial Day is a day off and a barbecue. The real meaning and purpose is lost to them. I am now feeling that things are changing. This morning I went to church and instead of the usual sermon the church spent the entire hour honoring those who have sacrificed in service of our nation. A veteran from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf War from our congregation was interviewed in a in video about the effect their war had on their lives. The pastor related their sacrifices to the freedoms we enjoy today. Members of the congregation who served our country were called up to the stage and presented an engraved medal from the church thanking them for their service. All of us were deeply touched by this gesture.

Of course the real purpose of Memorial Day is to honor those who did not return. This past weekend I know that you will have taken a moment to remember our fallen comrades and their ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms and way of life. 85 of our fellow troopers during the period April 1965 to September 1970 made this sacrifice for us their fellow soldiers and for our nation. We owe it to them to honor them in our thoughts and actions. My thoughts were on 3 fine young men who did not return: Sgt Thomas Robertson, 2nd platoon; Lt. Charles Ayres, 3rd platoon; and Sgt. James Feeney, 1st platoon. Many of you I know participate in local Memorial Day ceremonies. Some of you participate in Rolling Thunder at the Vietnam Memorial in Washington D.C. Your actions help honor these heroes. The actions and service of these heroes is a credit to our nation. They should not be forgotten.

Merry Christmas Veterans and Troops

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays To Our Troops, Veterans, and their Families. During this Christmas season we want to thank our veterans and soldiers for their bravery and selfless acts of courage in defending us and preserving our Nation's freedom. Again this year soldiers will observe the holiday season in Iraq and Afghanistan. They are separated from their families, and many more are preparing for deployments. All of us who remember similar Christmas seasons in our own lives sympathize deeply with them. To the right is the cover from the 1968 Christmas card sent home from Vietnam. Forty years ago we spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in platoon blocking positions near Nu Ba Den Mt. It was a lonely time for us then as it is for our soldiers today.

As we think of our Christmas so long ago away from home these sacrifices are most obvious to us during this season when so many of us are warm, safe and happy in our homes with friends and relatives. Our thoughts and prayers are for the safe return of our soldiers not only during this holiday season but every day throughout the year. We honor their sacrifices, ask God to watch over them and their families, and pray for their safe return.

Help Soldiers Traveling at Airports

Bob Dandridge has this suggestion to help support our servicemen and women who are traveling this holiday season.

If you happen to be driving by an airport anytime soon, remember your troops and the USO. If you have books and magazines pack'm up, stop by the store and pick up some packaged snacks and drinks and drop them off at the USO booth/room at the airport. All you ex GIs remember how lonely travel was. You can make it a little more pleasant. I've done it a couple of times and it feels great. Our men and women in uniform deserve our support and this is one of the little ways you can do it with a personal touch. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Bob.

Happy Thanksgiving

Have a great Thanksgiving today! Enjoy your holiday with family, friends, and relatives. Of course enjoy the great traditional meal that will be served today.

Back in 1968 A Troop was in the Iron Triangle on the high ground above the Saigon River on Thanksgiving Day. We had a great meal from our Troop mess section. Colonel McGowen in his helicopter flew out to our NDP with real ice cream and scooped it out for all of the troops after the meal. The excellent meal and real ice cream made one day special back in 1968.

There were a number of great songs that were popular when we were 'in country'. I am sure many of those songs are still our favorites. Many have become associated with our war in popular movies. One song I remember and still my favorite is the Moody Blues song, Nights in White Satin. It was released in 1967 and was not that popular at the time. Of course all of the songs that reminded us of home were popular. What song was your favorite? Let us know! We Gotta Get Out of This Place by the Animals was one of the most popular songs of the war (note: the song actually is about getting out of the ghetto).

Military Appreciation Monday at Golden Corral

Fellow Troopers,

For the past 6 years, Golden Corral has been honoring the US Military with a free “thank you” dinner and beverage at any Golden Corral restaurant on Military Appreciation Monday (first Monday after Veteran’s Day). This year, Golden Corral has designated Monday, November 12, 2007, from 5 to 9 pm, to honor any person who has ever served in the United States Military.

From the first Military Appreciation Monday in 2001 to the present, Golden Corral has donated 1.5 million free “thank you” meals and $1.9 million dollars to the Disabled American Veterans. More information is available on the Golden Corral website.

It is nice to see a large corporation honor our veterans. If you have a Golden Corral in your area you might consider taking advantage of this offer. Here in Tucson you need to get there early because the line gets long in a hurry.

Reunion 2008 Update

We have heard that D Troop is again throwing anyone they can find into a Huey for the reunion. We are getting tired of the helicopter drivers having the highest attendance. A Troop has been close to the top in attendance for the last 2 reunions. We had 40 troopers at the last reunion. We have 23 commitments to attend the Cincinnati reunion so far. Encourage any former trooper you know to attend the Greater Cincinnati Area Reunion in June 2008. Someone told me that A30, Geoffrey Cushing-Murray, is treating to Cincinnati's famous Skyline Chili. Military Medics - Our Heroes

I recently read a wonderful news report about the heroism of an Army medic and surgery team in Afghanistan. The Army medic, the medivac crew, and the field hospital surgeons all cared for and treated a wounded soldier who had an unexploded rpg lodged in his abdomen. As a side note the wounded soldier who recovered refused to receive his Purple Heart until he was able to walk to receive it. You can read the news article on the ABC website here. Our young servicemen and woman serving in the medical field today are doing great work in support of our soldiers. This article reminded me of the medics who served in our platoons and troop in Vietnam. I will always remember the courage of Charles 'Doc' Jones, 1st platoon and later troop medic. Doc Jones could always be counted on to be where the action was no matter how dangerous the situation. His personal courage was demonstrated time after time. He was wounded himself while treating others during the battle in the Rubber on Feb. 2, 1969. James Brian 0’Keeffe, 3rd platoon and later troop medic, is another of our heroic medics. James won the Silver Star for his actions on Jan. 17, 1969 in the Boi Loi Woods. With complete disregard for his own safety, Brian exposed himself to a heavy volume of fire as he dismounted his vehicle and moved to the aid of his wounded comrades. As he neared the burning APC, he killed a Viet Cong soldier who was preparing to fire at the vehicle. Reaching the beleaguered APC, O’Keeffe killed another enemy soldier who was moving towards his position. One of our medics made the ultimate sacrifice performing his duties. Alvin Langford gave his life while treating the wounded on August 19, 1968 during the Battle for Tay Ninh. The medics who rode with our platoons and troop were among the most admired and respected members of the unit. While they were actually assigned to headquarters troop, they always supported us with great valor, courage, and sacrifice. Thank you medics!

Soldiers' Angel

Soldiers' Angel is a program that connects citizens to our men and women deployed overseas. It shows our service members that we support them and helps to bring home a healthy hero. You can nominate a soldier to receive Soldiers' Angel support or you can adopt a service member to communicate with through Soldiers' Angel. When you adopt a soldier you must commit to sending a card/letter each week and a care package each month. The duration of the adoption is usually 6 to 12 months depending on the deployment.

Many of you already support our deployed 3/4 Cavalry Troopers and others of our brave men and women deployed overseas. If this is something you can do, your support of our heroes is greatly appreciated. You can also make a donation that helps pay for the care packages sent to the troops. There is much to do in the Cincinnati area. There is horse racing, riverboat gambling, and baseball. There is much history associated with the city of Cincinnati and the Northern Kentucky area.

A special 3/4 Cav Coin is being made and each member attending will receive a free coin as a memento.

On Thursday we will hold our traditional golf tourney at the Twin Oaks Golf and Plantation Club. Later that evening we will have our ice-breaker in the hospitality room. Bring your photos from Nam to share. Bring your new war stories too.

On Friday morning we will conduct our Memorial Service in the Stuart room. Afterwards a city tour has been planned with a stop at Newport on the Levee. Shops, restaurants, and entertainment are available. The Newport Aquarium is here. After you return, our group photos will be taken. Friday evening we will have a Bavarian dinner with live German music. MG (Ret) Tom Tait is the guest speaker. Tom was the squadron XO during Tet 68.

Saturday morning is our business meeting followed by a riverboat luncheon. Our formal banquet will be that evening and Gen Glenn Otis (Ret) will speak. Glenn was the squadron CO during Tet 68. Our raffle will follow.

Sunday we will have a breakfast buffet to give us a chance to say our good-byes.

Happy Birthday America

Our nation since its founding has been special in that it has been a beacon of freedom around the world. This freedom has come at a cost and on July 4th we celebrate our independence that has been fought for by generations of our citizens who have served our nation. This Independence Day we will celebrate with our friends and neighbors. We will watch fireworks, barbecue and have a 'charlie bravo'. 40 years ago if we celebrated we were in the Hobo Woods, the Big Rubber, Nui Ba Den, Tay Ninh, Cu Chi, and other places etched in our memories. We might of been able to have a 'charlie bravo' (most likely a warm one if we had one at all). We might have shot off some star clusters or had a 'mad minute' in celebration at the NDP. We may have been 'beating the bush' and could not have celebrated but each of us as we remember our time serving our nation can take pride in our contribution to its great legacy on Independence Day. We also should remember our men and women in uniform who today are risking all to bring freedom to millions of people and defending the traditions embodied in our 4th of July celebrations. None of these traditions has as much symbolism as displaying the flag. I am sure all of you display the flag on a regular basis. If you have a flag please display it this 4th of July. Fred Thompson spoke on the importance of the flag a few years ago. He says all that needs to be said about our flag and supporting the soldiers who defend our flag.

To my fellow Cavalry Troopers and friends,

Today, June 14th, marks the 232d Birthday of the United States Army.  On
this day in 1775, the Army was born. As former troopers of the 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry you can be proud of your contribution to our Nation and the Army. The United States Army and its soldiers have never failed in its duty to our great Nation.  You are a part of that great tradition and legacy.

Please remember the sacrifices of the soldiers of the United States Army.  I hope all will wish every soldier now serving, and those who wore the uniform in our war and other past wars, a Happy Birthday.  Every one of you who served is a hero. Thank you for your service and sacrifice.  Today our Army's soldiers, all heroes, are in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.  While most of us spent this day in comfort, our soldiers and their families are sacrificing enormously in the defense of liberty and our nation. These soldiers do not serve to become rich but instead serve for the privilege of defending our Nation, our values, and our way of life.  I know that you do this but when we meet a soldier, thank him or her for his or her service and sacrifice.

Thank you former Cavalry Troopers for your service and thank you current soldiers for your service and sacrifice.  Happy Birthday United States Army.

Memorial Day

Greetings Fellow Troopers

Unfortunately for many of our citizens Memorial Day is a day off and a barbecue. The real meaning and purpose is lost to them. This past weekend I know that you will have taken a moment to remember our fallen comrades and their ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms and way of life. 85 of our fellow troopers during the period April 1965 to September 1970 made this sacrifice for us their fellow soldiers and for our nation. We owe it to them to honor them in our thoughts and actions. My thoughts were on 3 fine young men who did not return: Sgt Thomas Robertson, 2nd platoon; Lt. Charles Ayres, 3rd platoon; and Sgt. James Feeney, 1st platoon. Their action and service is a credit to our nation. They should not be forgotten. One way to remember them is to purchase a memorial brick for the 25th Infantry Division Memorial which will become a permanent reminder of their sacrifice. Our goal is to purchase a brick for each of our 85 troopers who did not return. Many of you have purchased one or more memorial bricks. If you have the means and have not honored one of our fallen comrades, consider doing so.

Fiddler's Green is a poem that honors fallen Cavalrymen so I feel it is appropriate to add it here.
In 1925 the "Fiddler's Green" was published in The Cavalry Journal and later included in the Cavalry and Armor Heritage Book Series, Volume 1, Leadership published by the Armor Association.

Fiddler's Green

* * * So when the cavalrymen die, their souls ride away with full pack and arms down the long dusty Road to the Next World. But two miles before the fork where the road turns north for Heaven and south to Hell, they ride off the road and dismount. They lead off to the right and past them march the infantry and the artillerymen drive their guns and caissons past, marching on to the fork of the Road to the Next World.

But the dead troopers lead away from the road to the green fields with trees and streams where by the river are pitched row on row of tents. Up on the hill is Headquarters and there are the marquees of the dead old cavalry officers-they too halted here, for they stayed with their own rather than swagger about Heaven or sweat through Hell. They ride with staff and orderlies, flags and escort, Murat and Seidlitz, Forrest, Ziethen and Stuart, and many more, or sit about the tables in the shade, over maps and glasses, as they did in the years when they fought and rode in this world.

Along the picket lines under the trees, the dead troopers feed and groom, each man his own horse that he loved and rode in life. Now "Recall" blows, and "Mess Call": mess is served by celestial cooks and for K.P. and stable police the angels do miracles. The darkening sky shows its jewelry of stars and troopers rest about the fires, lying on the warm grass, with pipe and mug for every man. All together, man-at-arms and squire, cuirassier, lancer, hussar and dragoon; Briton and Frank, Cossack, Roman, Greek, Yank and Reb-all races and every uniform, at peace by the white and brown tents, the horses resting at the lines; the sergeants cease from troubling, the officers too are at rest; cavalrymen all, dreaming out eternity in the Last Camp.

And afar through the day and night, from the distant Road to the Next World, comes the muffled tramp of the infantry and the rumbling of the guns (and of late there has been the clangor of tanks and from overhead the hum of planes) marching on to the South Fork of the Road to the Next World.

Who would you most want to see attend the 2008 reunion.

It has been 40 years since we have seen our brothers we served with in A Troop. I have been to three reunions. I attended the 1969 reunion, the 2004 reunion, and 2006 reunion. For me the highlight is visiting with Sam Jenkins, who took a naive young lieutenant and helped mold me into the man I am today. That is a great joy. Visiting with 1st platoon members Carroll, Manny, Larry, Joe, Doc Jones, Ron, Layton, Pat and others at the reunions gives me memories and friendships I will always cherish. We only had a chance to have Joe Bracone at one reunion. He passed away before he could attend another.
I was thinking about the men we served with and who I would like to see at the reunion who has not attended one. I thought of Doug Langdon. Doug served on A10 & A12 from Aug 68 to Apr 69. He was known in the 1st platoon as "flower power" Doug served on A10 during the time I was the 1st platoon leader. Doug received a Bronze Star for his actions on 2 Feb 1969. Doug was a good man who looked out for his fellow soldiers and served the troop well. I am not sure we told him that back in 1968/1969. I would like to tell him now. Doug has not attended a reunion and I am not sure why. Maybe he is unaware of them. Several years ago I had some email contact with Doug but have not heard from him since.
Maybe each of us can make an effort to track down one or two guys we want to see attend the reunion. I will try and find Doug, contact him, and encourage him to attend the reunion.

Onward Towards the Reunion

Hello everyone,

In the spirit of doing something new and using more technology to keep us better informed, I am starting this 'News & Notes" blog. If you are new to this, a blog is short for web log and it is an easy web page to use for tons of different things. It will be a way for us to stay connected with each other without the need of using email.

As we move forward together, here are a few things we could work on:

The 3/4 Cav Reunion will be held in the Greater Cincinnati Area from 25 to 29 June, 2008. We will post more information as it becomes available.
We need to get the word out to all of our email contacts about the 2008 reunion. We need to have a great attendance from A Troop. We were only a few troopers short of having the most attendees at each of the last 2 reunions. Nothing is better than seeing our fellow comrades we served with. Encourage those who have concerns about attending. Maybe some of you can post to the blog about how great of an experience your first reunion was for you.

If you have ideas for increasing the attendance from A Troop at the reunion let us know.
Any ideas you might have about making this reunion special to A Troopers would be appreciated.
